Concept

After two years of working as a Web Content Administrator in the Ecommerce department of a retail chain, I decided to change the trajectory of my career. I am currently studying full stack Web Development course with CareerFoundry with the aim of securing my first role as a Junior Web Developer.

Aims for Web Development

In my previous career I became closely acquinted with a range of software created by Web Developers. As a result I have been able to develop useful insight into what a user needs from a development project. I am passionate about user-friendly, minimilst design. I would like to contribute to an environmentally friendly company, based in Scotland, that shares my passion for detail and customer focus.

Some Background

I graduated from the University of Stirling with a postgraduate qualification in Sports Management. After finiding it difficult to break into the Sports industry, I took a job in retail. I learned a lot from my time working on an Ecommerce website, but my favourite part of the job was always changing product pages and categories using HTML. I decided to follow my instincts and retrain as a Web Developer

More About Me...

For a long time I had the feeling I was in the wrong industry, but I didn't know what to do about it. After realising the only part of my job that I truly took enjoyment in was making changes to the website using HTML, I decided to retrain as a Web Developer. So far I have learned how to use a range of Web Development languages, I have created a portfolio website, and I am currently working on an Ecommerce Web App using Ruby on Rails. I have learned these skills over 6 months on a Full Stack Web Development course courtesy of CareerFoundry. I am excited about building on my knowledge and finding my first role as a Junior Web Developer.

I went through my school and university days with no strong notion of what I wanted to do. I just thought I’d figure it out as I went along and my choice would become clear after I graduated. After a four year undergraduate degree and a 1 year postgraduate course I still had no idea what to do. I took a job in an Ecommerce department for an online retailer and quickly learned that the job wasn’t for me. I wasn’t really interested in many aspects of my role with the exception of making changes to the frontend of the website using HTML. I did some soul searching and decided that creating and improving websites for a living would be a very different and exciting career, so I left my job, found part time work and now, signed up for a course and now, here I am!
I am passionate about sport and I have noticed in the past that finding information online about sports clubs, national governing bodies and event information is often difficult as there a lot of organisations that overlap and websites aren't always the primary focus as they are not sales based websites. I also believe there is a gap in the market for apps related to specific sports. If I could pick anything to work on, I would love to help the world of club sport improve its presence and functionality online.
So far I have found that it is easy to overthink and attempt to tackle a variety of challenges at the same time. My process now is to make an overall plan for a project and to break it down into small chunks. First I will gather the content, then I will determine the layout. After I am happy with the design and the functionality, I will move on to the next section and repeat the process.
I have just finished my first project - building this website - It has taken me approximately 100 hours to make it, but seeing as this is the first project, I hope to streamline my process and improve on my turn around.
Q. Why did the Web Developer drown? A. She didn't know whether to float: left; or float: right;... Also, she had too many anchors!
